The Project
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recently initiated a multi-year project to conduct a comprehensive survey and inventory of previously unrecorded rock imagery sites at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site.
Year One Highlights
- Focused on North Mountain, the first phase of a four-year effort
- Survey will ultimately include North Mountain, East Mountain, West Mountain, and East Spur
- 161 newly recorded rock imagery panels
- 3 previously known panels re-documented
- 164 total panels recorded
- 138 panels contain recognizable imagery
- 26 panels consist of paint remnants or smudges
- 35 panels contain time-diagnostic Jornada Mogollon imagery
This presentation will cover the project’s methodology, survey results, and initial interpretations of the newly documented imagery. Attendees will also hear early findings from the Year Two West Mountain survey.
